Winter is definitely here in the Coromandel.
(I'm not using the phrase “Winter is Coming” as I'm pretty disappointed the way Game of Thrones finished, but I digress…)
I’m not a Winter person at all. Give me sunshine, beaches, bbqs, socialising, hot nights, cold cocktails, palm tees. Along with the cold weather, winter comes with all the bugs and lurgies that are circulating around town which the kids love to bring home. I just want to hibernate to try and keep us all healthy but obviously that's not possible, as my sanity would suffer too much!
So instead we use Thieves Balm during the winter months. It is a natural alternative to other petroleum based chest rubs such as Vicks. Our Thieves Balm is a blend of whipped grass fed NZ tallow with an essential oil blend of Cinnamon, Clove, Lemon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary oils, commonly known as “Thieves Oil”.
The origin of Thieves oil is an interesting tale! In the 1400’s, as the bubonic plague swept through Europe, four thieves were charged with robbing the corpses and dying victims of the Black Plague. Yet they didn’t succumb to the disease itself. After being charged with the burglary offences the judge offered them leniency and to avoid being burnt alive they shared their secret. They were spice merchants and perfume makers and had devised a potent herbal concoction which they would they would apply to their hands, temples, feet and to a mask over their face. They claimed this is what had protected them from infection.
Thieves Balm is ideal to rub on your chest and back at the first sign of a cold. The warming and comforting effect of the Cinnamon and Clove essential oils help to soothe aching and tired muscles and the Eucalyptus Oil provides respiratory support to help clear your sinuses. A small amount of balm spread on the soles of the kids feet before bed helps relieve their coughs and thus aids in a restful slumber.
Rosemary and Lemon essential oils provide anti inflammatory, antibacterial and disinfectant properties. It is an excellent natural, moisturizing hand sanitizer.
Finally, I've found a small amount of balm rubbed on the back of your neck helps relieve and lesson the severity of headaches.
